Orientation for New Council Delegates

Friday, November 24 (9:00 – 10:00)

For new delegates to CAUT Council, this session will provide an overview of procedures and rules of order for the meeting. There will also be a review of CAUT’s organizational structure, activities and services, and meeting policies.

Information Session 1 - Responding to Hate on Campus

Friday, November 24 (11:00 – 12:00)

On June 29 of this year, a University of Waterloo professor and two students in a gender studies class were stabbed in what police reported to be “a hate-motivated incident related to gender expression and gender identity.” Concerns about hate against marginalized communities prompted the Canadian Labour Congress Convention to pass an emergency resolution earlier this year urging the labour movement to act against hate in and outside the workplace. Join us to discuss how academic staff associations can help combat hate, protect academic freedom, and ensure administrations take appropriate measures to keep vulnerable faculty, staff, and students safe.

Information Session 2 - Using the CAUT Collective Agreement Database

Friday, November 24 (11:00 – 12:00)

The CAUT Collective Agreement Database (CAD) is a searchable repository of university and college collective agreements. This information session will walk participants through the functionalities and features of the CAD and provide practical tips about how to make the most of this resource.

Information Session 3 - AI and Academic Labour

Friday, November 24 (11:00 – 12:00)

The development of large language models like ChatGPT is affecting academic work, from the teaching and assessment of students, to the design and and application of research. What issues are raised by the new AI technologies, and how can academic staff associations ensure these tools support and do not undermine academic integrity, equity, and academic freedom?
